Personal Installment Loan

A personal installment loan may help eligible borrowers spread the cost of a significant personal purchase over scheduled payments. Depending on the lender and loan program, funds may be used for purchases such as appliances, furniture, or electronics. The amount, rate, repayment period, and approval requirements are set by the lender and stated in the loan documents.

How a personal installment loan works

With an installment loan, a borrower receives a stated loan amount and repays it over an agreed period through regular payments. Payments may include principal, interest, and applicable fees. Some personal loans are unsecured, while other financing products may require collateral. The lender’s agreement explains the structure, payment dates, and what happens if a payment is late or missed.

For a vehicle purchase, compare a dedicated auto loan as well as any personal loan option. Auto loans are commonly secured by the vehicle, which means the lender may have rights in the vehicle under the loan agreement. Ask the lender to explain any collateral requirement before you apply.

Plan the purchase and monthly payment

Start with the total purchase cost and the amount you can comfortably repay after housing, utilities, existing debt, savings, and other regular expenses. A longer repayment period can reduce the scheduled payment while increasing the time interest may accrue. Choose a payment that fits your budget throughout the full term, not only in the first few months.

Lenders may review identity, income, credit history, existing obligations, and other application details. Requirements differ by lender and by product. Applying does not guarantee approval, a particular loan amount, or a particular rate.

Compare the full cost of borrowing

Before accepting an offer, review the annual percentage rate (APR), interest rate, amount financed, payment amount and frequency, repayment term, and total amount you would repay. APR can help compare borrowing costs because it reflects the interest rate and certain loan fees. Also check for origination, late-payment, or prepayment fees and whether the rate is fixed or can change.

Compare written offers using the same loan amount and repayment period where possible. Look beyond the monthly payment: a lower payment may come with a longer term and a higher total cost. Read the lender’s disclosures and ask questions about any charge, payment condition, or term you do not understand. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s overview of personal installment loans explains common uses and repayment considerations.

Make payments on time

Keep a copy of the signed agreement and note each due date. If automatic payments are available, confirm the withdrawal date and keep enough money in the linked account. Contact the lender as soon as possible if you expect difficulty making a payment; any options depend on the lender and your loan agreement. Late or missed payments may have financial and credit consequences under applicable law and the contract.
